In clinical practice, management of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is predominantly based on the diameter of the lumen. State-of-the-art fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulations have proven to be superior in estimating rupture risk, although they still have considerable shortcomings. In this paper we address one such unresolved problem, and present the outline of biomechanical material parameter distribution identification via inverse finite element (FE) analysis. Our method is based on the non invasive approximation of the displacement field using electrocardiogram- gated computer tomography angiography (ECG-gated CT-angiography, CTA) and estimating the load field with usual computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Parameters of our model connecting the two abovementioned sets of variables result from an optimization algorithm minimizing a work and energy related variational functional. Consequently, also supported by experimental measurements, we are able to assess local distribution of the biomechanical material properties of the arterial wall and give a functional characterization of vessel wall degeneration.

  • X-ray synchrotron tomographic microscopy enables the acquisition of large amount of images with a geometric and radiometric resolution sufficient for the morphometric and topologic analysis of vascular and even of microvascular network of different organs. In this study cylindrical shaped, NiDAB labelled brain samples of a diameter of half a millimeter were imaged and analyzed with an effective pixel size of 0.38 μm. Several thousands of tomographic slices build up each reconstructed volume meaning that an automatized analysis tool is indispensable. These big data sets are processed by the developed algorithms on commercially available PCs with an automated image analysis technology in acceptable processing time. The obtained vessel segments are stored for further topological and morphometric analyses or surface/volumetric visualization purposes. These analyses contain vessel feature distribution analysis followed by 3D reconstruction. The obtained results are in accordance to the literature data.

Cikkünkben ennek a műtéti eljárásnak a numerikus elemzését mutatjuk be. Kitérünk a műtéti eljárás működésének elvére és kísérletet teszünk az eredeti műtéti geometria módosítására a szemlencse hatékonyabb alkalmazkodási szélességének elérése érdekében. A közölt eredményeket a numerikus vizsgálataink végeredményeire alapoztuk.

The human eye is one of the most important sensory organs, thus we need pay attention to keep healthy it during the whole life. Nowadays there are lots of opportunities to remedy the eye diseases, such as different type of eyeglasses or surgeries. One of the mentioned surgeries relates to the sclera of the eye. This procedure is a surgical technique performed with ophthalmic laser to restore the accommodation of the eye and terminate presbyopia. In this paper we analysed this surgical technique in biomechanical point of view based on a finite element numerical model. The results presented in this study were based on the numerical outcomes.

In children’s posture examinations the question often arises whether an X-ray examination is necessary or appropriate. The use of X-ray is not an option in screenings or in case of any contraindication. In that case in addition to a physical examination a non-invasive, alternative examination method must be chosen. Both Spinal Mouse and Zebris ultrasound-based spine measuring instrument could be used to measure the shapes of the children’s spines. The main aim of the study is to determine the shape of the school-age children’s spines in the sagittal plane with an alternative, non-invasive, radiation-free measuring method. Normal ranges of kyphosis (TK), lordosis (LL) and thoracal and lateral inclination (TTI and LI) values are determined geared to age and height. The subjects were 530 helathy and 394 bad postured children between the ages of 6 and 15. In their case it can be stated that the normal values should be determined according to height ( they were divided into groups according to their height between 120 and 180 cm with 5 cm long intervals). The results also showed that in both groups (in healthy children and in children with bad posture) there were a significant differences between the values of males and females, so normal values should be divided according to gender. The measurement results also indicated that comparing healthy children to bad postured children the two angels determining the shape of the spine (TK and LL) show significant differences.

The oldest and most accurate way of determining the shape of the spine is to make X-rays from two different ways, which can be performed once a year even in serious diseases, due to its high radiation exposure. However, in case of conservative treatment of spinal disorders, continuous monitoring is necessary, thus different in-vivo methods are being developed, like optical (Moiré method), electromagnetic (Spinal Mouse) and ultrasound based (Zebris) measuring devices, which can record the shape of spine without radiation exposure. Based on the results of previous studies, which examined non-invasive spine measurement methods, it seems appropriate to characterize the spinal curvature by the equations of Fourier or spline curves fitted on the spatial coordinates of the spine or by the angles characterizing the spinal curvatures, derived from these curves. Zebris and SpinalTouch measurements of 73 patients – healthy, aged between 9 and 13 – were the basis of the comparison. According to the results, the angles characterizing the thoracic and lumbar curvatures derived from the curves shows a high correlation (0.82 – 0.96) with the angles calculated with the traditional method. This shows, that the mathematical description of the spine can be used as an alternative method.
