A Rhyming Decalogue from a 15th Century Text Book of Esztergom and its Central European Context

This article provides a thorough analysis of a Latin didactic poem on the Ten Commandments, neither published nor studied so far. One copy of this text (hereafter 'B') preserves some traces of teaching and learning methods in the Esztergom cathedral school in 1463: the Hungarian Glosses of Esztergom and a commentary that was probably composed here. 'B' exemplifies how the mediaeval students with different mother tongues learned through mnemonic aids and in parallel how one could improve preaching and self-expression by using a richer vocabulary (both in Latin and in the vernacular). Vernacular literature does not provide such rich alternative sources for studying these phenomena in late medieval Hungary. This text comprises new textual evidence for a stronger cultural relation between Esztergom and Cracow in the middle of the 15th century.

An analysis of each of the ten composite manuscripts which comprise the surviving copies of the Decalogue offers a uniquely rich comparative perspective for evaluating how this text was disseminated – probably by students of the University of Cracow – and employed in the 1450s–1460s for a variety of purposes in Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, and generally in German speaking environment. We find cathedral schools and monastic schools, an abbot as well as a parish priest among those who copied and reused the rhyming Decalogue, primarily for preaching.

The structural analysis of the rhyming Decalogue reveals how this relatively long poem (124 verses) combines two literary genres: that of the didactic poem in Leonine-hexameter and that of the catechism, teaching both the Ten Commandments (following the Augustinian canon) and the virtues and vices. The ninth Commandment contains a religious tale about how a nobleman made a contract with the devil (a later addition to the text) and instructions on preaching with observant-Franciscan features. The latter characteristic suggests assigning this passage to a date shortly after 1453 when John of Capistrano spent nine months in Cracow.

This philological analysis of the variant readings results in a family tree of eight manuscripts. The author of the didactic poem, according to the commentaries, was a "doctor rector scole in castro Cracovie". Previous attempts to identify him with Florian Mokrski, the bishop of Cracow, or with Paulus de Zathor are refuted.

The article is published with an edition of the best reading of the text (P1).

The Zimmermann-library in Eperjes in 1687

The study of reading and book culture has recently been brought to the foreground of the European and, parallel to this, the Hungarian research in the field of the history of civilization. Based on the results of the leading German, French and British researchers various aspects of this segment of the history of civilization in the Middle- and Early Modern Ages have been brought to light. Starting from writing books, through printing, binding, circulation till the readers, critics and collectors all stages of the history of books have been analysed. Although the analysis of the Hungarian relics have been going on in a slower pace, in the last few decades several pieces of research were started through which the archivalia concerning the history of books have been published. Along with this the amount of the relevant technical literature has also increased.

The aim of the present paper is to introduce the book stock of a library which has been known so far only from its catalogue, yet it has not been studied intensively. The almost 400-item-long catalogue, which was compiled in Eperjes (Prešov), in the cultural centre of the city league of Upper Hungary, in 1687 lists the books of the merchant Sigismundus Zimmermann. This collection of books emerge from other libraries of city dwellers of the time in both its quantity and its quality. Since data concerning the biography of Sigismundus Zimmermann are relatively few and fregmented a further aim of the present research is to introduce the owner of the collection based on the information that can be deduced from his books. Through this I am trying to find an answer to the following questions: how far can this collection be treated as a model in respect to the circumstances of the era and the readings of the average city dwellers, what type of erudition does it transmit and finally what kinds of roles (professional, social, political, etc.) could the owner prepare for with its help.

    A feledés névtelenje. A publicista Tóth Móric81 [77.45 kB - HTM]EPA-00021-00368-0050
